Storyteller? :D

Telling stories?

I’m an illustrator, not a story teller.
And this mindset changed, after I joined this workshop. Laughing from mouth to mouth, I feel like I becoming a little girl again. This workshop was held by KPBA Murti Bunanta, with Margaret MacDonald and  Alton Chung as the facilitator. Great teacher they are, and what inspiring me is their enthusiasm when they share their technique, so effective and to the point. In 6 hours workshop here is the point that I get from them.

Learn the  Stories
1. Choose your stories, the one that you really like
2. Read it aloud and re listen again *record it
3. Memorize the first line and the last end of the story, you can always modified the rest of it, but never forget how you want to begin and end the story, or else you might get ‘lost in action’ 😀
4. Pay attention on the sound speed and accent.
5. There are no right or wrong in telling a folklore, be creative, make your own way to tell the story, If you like to use props, use it. If you feeling likely to use only your body, use it.
6. Retold and practice again without using the book.

The performances
1. Pause before you start.
2. First sentences is your charm, pick wisely
3. Look at your audiences, communicate with them.
4. Control your pace when you’re telling the story. Slowly, fast… It’s your way, go ahead.
5. Listen to your own words. Use beautiful words
6. Act if you are confidence 😀
7. Perfect ending is your magic word
8. Pause after the closing. And you’re done.

Tips from Alton

What is relevant for me is, how you manage your stage fright, here is what he said:

Use your energy, focus the fear and change it into an energy that help you to tell the stories, focus on what you do. What I get is, we have to throw away the fear of thinking ‘what if’ ‘is my way of telling the stories good enough’ ‘ why that one children yawn’ etc etc.

Alton have a very bright articulation, very powerful voice that can attract audience from the very noisy room into a silent audiences with enthusiasm. He said that we have to always practicing our voice by actualizing it , but don’t be hard on your voice because if you overworked it, it  could damage , and you just don’t want it to happen , right?

What matter in children storytelling is:  body gesture, vocal changing character, and movement.
You could see his youtube and pay attention to the element there, it is great!

KPK Book- Let’s Be Honest!

The Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (KPK) is theIndonesian Corruption Eradication Commission, which was formed after special consideration on the extraordinary nature of corruption in Indonesia. I was asked to make an illustration for a children book that taught them to learn about the concept of corruption and being honest.

First the manuscript take the main character as a boy, and I just feel that a human character for this subject would be to mainstream, so I’m trying to thing about other character that can catch a child attention, a naughty critter from Indonesia,  a brave and wild one.

So my option goes to the red cat from Kalimantan, known as the bay cat or Borneo Cat. Look at his photo, isn’t he look scary and fierce? Haha.. anyway I won’t make a character so scary that children would run away by looking at him. But he end up like this. Cute isn’t he?img_20161201_0002

The story is teaching children to be honest, here the little kitten using his mother’s money to buy some ice cream without permission, so he’s a little overwhelmed and get a nightmare because of his guilty feeling.

And herewith the final version of the book, with a little bit additional story of traditional cake making as the background.

I hope this book could teach the children to learn about honesty, and bravery to admit one mistakes and deal with the problem 🙂

sungguh berantakan meja kami 😀

Poem Illustration

Never done this before, when ibu Nana from Lembaga Seni & Sastra Reboeng contact me to do some illustration for her book, a compilation book of children poems. At first I’m smiling at how this children described their feeling in poem, some poem are very children-angle-described, but surprisingly there are 1 or 2 poem that are quite deep. Interesting.

These are 2 poem taken from compilation, the first one is about the flight accidident Air Asia QZ 8501, and the second one is about disappointment &  complaints. Part of it is below.

I meet the Lord

The Lord says: “I’m going to rent a taxi for you to return to earth!”

I answer nothing

And the Lord immediately kicks me to earth

I fall into the sea

Still lucky I am not dead

And the rescue team finds me

Wuuss… Angin Membawa Telur Terbang menang di Samsung SKTAA 2016

Awalnya ngak nyangka juga pas dapet email dari panitia, disuruh merahasiakan, jangn bilang bilang sampai pas eventnya, bolak balik  buka email serasa tidak percaya.
Bukan kenapa-napa, seumur hidup saya jarang banget menang yg namanya award2 an ini, paling mentok itu menang hadiah nonton konser konser lewat radio karena kecepatan tangan mencet tuts telepon. Setelah itu yang namanya seperti kejatuhan langit ala Abraracourix itu ya waktu menang lotere masuk perguruan tinggi negri setelah 2 kali mencoba. Jadi..? Ya seneng banget gitu deh 😀

bareng Ibu Angi- Penulisnya

Salam kreatif

I’m not weird. I am limited edition

Got an influenza these days, a headache, and end up with doodling on the sketch book, you know the usual 100 grams paper, for sketch. But after several strokes I just wanted to try a little more strokes, and color it, first I use a carbon pencil but somewhat, I just hink that this sketch need more than just a pencil, si I decided to color it with my watercolor, a watercolor on a sketch paper, yap. A little wrinkles on the paper and this is the result.

I’m not weird. I am limited edition😀 Love this quotes!
It’s some kind of semihuman-cat mutan, that have a weird different shape of eyes, make it ackward but yet beautiful in its own way.
I think human also like that, we all have many differences that make people with certain kind of type, put a stamp on our head that called “weirdos”. And on this place called earth we could survived it and stand up high- we are limited edition. 🙂weird 2l
