Tips on Making Children Picture Books -Part 2

Part 2

Okay, sekarang saya mau sharing tentang cerita Phillips,

  4. Hati hati dengan lipatan tengah buku, jangan sampai objek utama terpotong ditengah, a big no no.
Problem sometimes can not be solved, but can be accepted.

KPK Book- Let’s Be Honest!

The Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (KPK) is theIndonesian Corruption Eradication Commission, which was formed after special consideration on the extraordinary nature of corruption in Indonesia. I was asked to make an illustration for a children book that taught them to learn about the concept of corruption and being honest.

First the manuscript take the main character as a boy, and I just feel that a human character for this subject would be to mainstream, so I’m trying to thing about other character that can catch a child attention, a naughty critter from Indonesia,  a brave and wild one.

So my option goes to the red cat from Kalimantan, known as the bay cat or Borneo Cat. Look at his photo, isn’t he look scary and fierce? Haha.. anyway I won’t make a character so scary that children would run away by looking at him. But he end up like this. Cute isn’t he?img_20161201_0002

The story is teaching children to be honest, here the little kitten using his mother’s money to buy some ice cream without permission, so he’s a little overwhelmed and get a nightmare because of his guilty feeling.

And herewith the final version of the book, with a little bit additional story of traditional cake making as the background.

I hope this book could teach the children to learn about honesty, and bravery to admit one mistakes and deal with the problem 🙂

Poem Illustration

Never done this before, when ibu Nana from Lembaga Seni & Sastra Reboeng contact me to do some illustration for her book, a compilation book of children poems. At first I’m smiling at how this children described their feeling in poem, some poem are very children-angle-described, but surprisingly there are 1 or 2 poem that are quite deep. Interesting.

These are 2 poem taken from compilation, the first one is about the flight accidident Air Asia QZ 8501, and the second one is about disappointment &  complaints. Part of it is below.

I meet the Lord

The Lord says: “I’m going to rent a taxi for you to return to earth!”

I answer nothing

And the Lord immediately kicks me to earth

I fall into the sea

Still lucky I am not dead

And the rescue team finds me

Our voices and
Our complaints

Are like rubbish
Oh, cry me a river
Looking at the misery

Coba Lagi.. Coba lagi… (Book- The Boy Who Can Not Tie His Shoes)

Grraaah!  I like my new shoes but why it’s so hard to tie it!

It’s a book about process,
a determination and a story about
a young boy who have a new shoes but don’t have any idea how to tie one.

First time I read the script, it gives me a wide smile,

I can picture  every single expression this little dude will be; happy, determined, stress, tired, relieved.

And I do wish that everyone who read this to their young, will express it while they read it, every single expression, and watch how the listener will also change their own expression, that will be fun!

Make this book as a fun one, make them learn about patience, process, and result, at last :).

Don’t you agree?

Just contact the publisher to get the book : aksaberama@gmail.com

Happy belated Christmas!

The last year Christmas cards I did for the card company, they want something modern and  simple so here they are 🙂

The village of little people, and snow, and ice skating, and snow, again.

:: and this is the real look of the little people, they have no mouth and nose!

In the land of pine tree and deer.
We don’t have snow here, so that’s why we are crazy about the idea of white Christmas *sigh 😀

:: another little people and little deer that are ‘big’

My artwork PoD online shop

It’s the day when my friend from Printerous approach me and said,’ Hey, do you want to sell your artwork online?” It’s like setting up a bunch of local artist , and give them chance to show their work printed on some stuff, Print on Demand stuff. I’m kinda apathetic in the concept of artwork  translated into a printed thing, usually because of the quality in Indonesia, and the form that not suitable to my expectation.

but then, I looked and looked and see the end result, well, amazingly it’s suitable to what I’ve expected, so here it is, my online artwork shop, gotta buy one for myself , I’m really impressed and of course , happy, that finally we have something like this in here, it will help all the local talent and get them enough place to expose their work.

So if you interested in my art, welcome to my shop, take a look around and let me know what you think 🙂
